Check what products/clothing are made of - opt for quality products that will last longer instead of items that you will need to replace again and again. Buy goods that have been made locally, that way they have travelled less and produced fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
PlanetArksays: Clothing that is chemical free and made from organic cotton, hemp or bamboo are good environmentally friendly alternatives to clothes made from petroleum-based synthetics such as nylon or polyester. They're also more comfortable to wear because they breathe and are absorbent.
Plastic not so fantastic
Single use plastic bags went out of fashion seasons ago, so on your next shopping spree remember to take a reusable bag with you. Reusable bags have evolved from the green grocery bag that used to be the only option for the environmentally conscious shopper. You can even get reusable bags that fold up to fit in your handbag so you always have one on hand for those impulse buys.
Freecycle
Check out the website freecycle.org where you can give and get unwanted items for free.
By shopping online you are saving the environment in more ways than one. Postal delivery involves less transport than every customer driving to the shops!
Swap frocks
Hold a swap party - invite your friends to bring along their unwanted clothes, then swap items amongst each other.
Planet Ark says: Getting a cotton dress from a swap party rather than buying it at a shop, saves around 22,000 litres of water!
