Fashion and beauty editor Lucy has a pretty amazing job – but getting to spend a whole afternoon on a shopping challenge? That’s just insane! Check out what she got up to in a race around Auckland city…

I don’t think it’s too far-fetched to say that it would be any girl’s dream to be given $400 cold hard cash told to go shopping… Well that’s exactly what I got to do this week!

Thanks to BIG little City (the go-to guide for everything happening in Auckland) myself and a few more (very lucky) fashion editors / radio DJs / bloggers got to participate in pretty much the best challenge ever in one of the coolest shopping meccas in Auckland – the city!

Arriving at our top-secret location, we were greeted by none-other than the fabulous Colin Mathura-Jeffree who revealed the challenge to eight nervous girls – we had no idea what we were in for! We were each given a wallet with $400 cash, a map of Auckland City’s shopping districts and four Resene colour swatches. With just over an hour to hoon around town, we had to create an outfit based on one of the Resene colours, go to as many stores as we could and put together an amazing outfit. Easy right?

WELL, give a girl $400 and set her free, and it’s a lot more daunting than it sounds! I knew I had to find one thing to base my whole outfit around so when I stumbled across a pair of yellow silk shorts from Lippy, I knew I was set! And what better to go with cute coloured shorts than a wicked printed tee? I found the perfect partner at Cotton On, in a black and white polka dot t-shirt for $30 – score! The shoes were easy – brown suede brogues with pink soles? Yes please – and a total score at Wild Pair. And with a couple of accessories (teal belt from Portmans and peach sunnies from Max), my outfit was complete.

Running as fast as I could in the pouring rain down Queen Street, swerving in and out of slow-moving businessmen, I made it to MAC Britomart, drenched, but ready to get my lipstick done as the final touch to my outfit.

Boom! I was back to base with five minutes to spare and a freakin’ cute outfit in-hand. After putting on our ensembles for the judges and talking them through what we’d chosen, the winner was revealed. I’d love to say I won (because that would be the cherry on top of an amazing arvo) but sadly I was beaten to the punch. But when Colin declared we got to keep everything we’d bought for ourselves (yep, that’s right – an entirely new outfit!) we were all winners!

So, although I can’t give you all $400 (I wish!) to shop up a storm, if you’re ever in Auckland city, there are some sweet bargains just waiting to be snapped up. And if you’re around on March 3rd, don’t forget to check out Fashion in the BIG little City and score yourself some sweet prizes.
